What is Reactivity?

Reactivity isn't aggression, though it can sometimes look like it. It's often an emotional response – fear, frustration, over-excitement, or a lack of coping skills – leading to behaviours like barking, lunging, whining, or pulling when triggered. This course focuses on giving you and your dog the tools to manage these feelings and respond calmly.

What You Will Learn:

Weeks 1-3 Online Learning & Foundation Skills

This comprehensive course will equip you with a deep understanding of reactivity and practical strategies for positive change:

  • Understanding Canine Communication: Decode your dog's body language and signals, and learn to identify early warning signs of discomfort or arousal. Understand what your dog is truly trying to tell you.

  • The Science of Change: Desensitisation & Counter-Conditioning: Master the cornerstone techniques for changing your dog's emotional response to triggers. Learn how to gradually expose your dog to triggers positively, transforming fear or frustration into neutrality or even joy.

  • Effective Management Strategies: Discover proactive ways to prevent reactive outbursts, including creating safe distances, managing the environment, and setting your dog up for success in real-world scenarios.

  • Essential Lead Handling Skills: Develop loose-lead walking techniques, emergency turns, and effective handling strategies to maintain control and safety, reducing tension on the lead for both you and your dog.

  • Building Confidence & Focus: Learn exercises to build your dog's focus on you amidst distractions, strengthening your bond and making you the most rewarding part of their environment.

  • Decoding Your Dog's Stress Signals: Recognise subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs of stress and anxiety in your dog, enabling you to intervene before a full-blown reaction occurs.

  • Proactive Preparedness: Develop strategies for unexpected encounters and learn how to gracefully exit challenging situations.

Week 4 & 5: Personalised Guidance (1 x 1-2-1 In-Person Session - 60 minutes).

A dedicated session in person, tailored to your dog's specific needs and challenges.

We'll troubleshoot issues, refine your techniques, and practice skills in a controlled environment.

Weeks 6 & 7

Building Real-World Confidence (2 x Buddy Session - 60 minutes)

Practice your skills in a controlled, supportive environment alongside another course participant and their dog. This session focuses on controlled exposure to a neutral dog, applying desensitization techniques with expert guidance.

Reinforces learned skills in a real-world setting with a neutral dog. This is a fantastic opportunity to see how far you and your dog have come and build confidence for future interactions.
