Have you ever wondered what’s going on in your dog’s head when they spend five minutes intensely investigating a single patch of grass? To us, it’s just a walk; to them, it’s a high-definition sensory experience.
A dog’s sense of smell is their primary way of navigating the world, and by tapping into this natural superpower, we can solve a host of behavioural challenges while having a massive amount of fun. At Rovers Return Dog Training & Behaviour, we are huge advocates for scent work—not just as a hobby, but as a vital tool for canine mental health.
Scent work is one of the most inclusive activities in the dog world. Because it is low-impact and mentally driven, it offers incredible benefits across the board:
For Puppies: It builds confidence by encouraging independent problem-solving in a safe environment.
For Seniors: It provides essential mental stimulation for dogs who may no longer be physically able to go on long hikes, keeping their minds sharp and engaged.
For Anxious/Reactive Dogs: Scent work is naturally grounding. When a dog sniffs, their heart rate lowers, and they enter a state of focused "flow," which helps reduce baseline cortisol levels and provides a much-needed break from environmental hypervigilance, increasing serotonin levels, which is a natural mood stabiliser.
Scent is known to transmit directly to the amygdala, which is the emotional epicentre of the brain, so it can positively impact your dogs' behaviour.
Basically, scent work is suitable for all dogs, regardless of age, breed, activity level, and temperament.

If you own a high-drive working breed (like a Spaniel, Collie, or GSD) or a dog that seems to have a "broken off-switch," you know that physical exercise often isn't enough. You can walk them for miles, and they just come back as a fitter, more athletic version of their hyper-excited selves.
Scent work provides the "biological fulfilment" these dogs crave. Working breeds were designed to perform complex tasks. By giving them a "scenting job," you satisfy their internal drive to work.
For over-excited dogs, the intense concentration required to find a hidden scent, as well as reducing neurotransmitters that affect your dogs' excitement promoting calmer, less frantic behaviours.
Ten minutes of sniffing is more exhausting than an hour of running because it requires the brain to process thousands of data points simultaneously. So you can reduce walking your dog for hours desperately trying to tire them out!
Scent work is a great way to exercise and train an older dog.
If walks have become less enjoyable for your older dog because of physical limitations like arthritis, often mean they can no longer enjoy the long hikes or high-impact games they once did. This physical "retirement" often leads to boredom and depression, which can accelerate mental decline. Scent work is low-impact and can be done at a slow pace or even in a small living room, allowing senior dogs to feel a sense of purpose and "work" without straining their joints. Scent work is a great way to stimulate them and keep their mind active. Scent work has been proven to help prevent cognitive decline. Interestingly, a dog’s sense of smell is often the last sense to fade. While their vision may blur and their hearing may dim, their nose remains a powerful window to the world. Encouraging them to use this primary sense helps them stay connected to their environment, providing a much-needed boost to their confidence and overall quality of life.
Scent work is easy to implement at home, with little equipment. There are many ways to implement scent work, however, If you want to take your dog's sniffing skills to the next level, the UK has some fantastic structured programs that we highly recommend:
This program is fantastic for those who enjoy a "detective" style of search. It focuses on teaching dogs to find specific scents (like Cloves or Gun Oil) in various environments, including luggage, vehicles, and interior rooms. It’s a great way to build a clear communication system between you and your dog.
Modelled after the training used by operational detection dogs (like those in the police or customs), UK Sniffer Dogs focuses on "active" searching. It’s highly engaging, fast-paced, and incredibly rewarding for the dog. They offer a tiered "Bronze, Silver, Gold" system, which is perfect for owners who love having a goal to work toward.
Rovers Return Dog Training in Leicester is certified by Scent Work UK (level one) and Bronze certified UK Sniffer Dog instructor, as well as specialising in Reactive Dogs
The best part about scent work? You can do it anywhere. Whether you're in your living room on a rainy day or out in the park, the "equipment" is already built into your dog’s face.
By encouraging your dog to hunt, find, and indicate a scent, you aren't just tiring them out—you are giving them a sense of purpose. It’s simple to implement, requires no fancy gear, and is the kindest way to provide the mental "work" every dog deserves.
Rovers Return Dog Training Leicestershire runs regular scent work classes for all dogs and specialised classes for reactive dogs. Click here to find out more
