Pawsitive Steps: Choosing the Right Dog Walker for Your Furry Friend

Let's face it, life gets busy. Between work, family, and everything else, finding the time for those essential dog walks can sometimes feel like a juggling act.

That's where a professional dog walker can be a real lifesaver!

But with so many options out there, how do you choose the right person to entrust with your beloved canine companion?

At Rovers Return Dog Training & Behaviour, we believe your dog's well-being is paramount. That's why we've put together this guide to help you sniff out the perfect professional dog walker. Here's what to look for:

1. Experience and Knowledge: Beyond Just Loving Dogs

Of course, a genuine love for dogs is a must! But a professional dog walker brings more to the leash than just affection. Look for someone with:

  • Experience handling various breeds and temperaments: Do they have experience walking dogs similar to yours? A reactive terrier requires a different approach than a playful Labrador puppy.

  • How many dogs do they walk in a group? Four is a good number, I used to walk six, but only if I knew they were all well-behaved!

  • Understanding of basic dog behaviour: Can they recognise signs of stress, anxiety, or discomfort in your dog? This is crucial for ensuring your dog's safety and well-being.

  • Knowledge of local dog walking regulations and etiquette: Are they aware of lead laws, off-lead areas (if appropriate and permitted), and how to be a responsible member of the dog-walking community?

  • They could have studied professional dog training courses such as this one from IMDT

2. Professionalism and Reliability: Trust is Key

You're entrusting someone with your furry family member and access to your home. Professionalism and reliability are non-negotiable. Look for:

  • Clear communication: Are they responsive to your inquiries? Do they provide updates on walks, including photos or GPS tracking?

  • Punctuality and consistency: Will they arrive on time for scheduled walks? Can you rely on them to be there when they say they will?

  • Insurance and DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check: A reputable dog walker will have public liability insurance to cover any unforeseen incidents and a clear DBS check (formerly CRB) for your peace of mind. Don't hesitate to ask for proof.

  • Contracts and clear terms of service: A professional will have a written agreement outlining their services, fees, cancellation policies, and emergency procedures.

3. Safety First: Your Dog's Well-being is Paramount

Your dog's safety should be their top priority. Consider:

  • Group sizes: Do they offer single or group walks? What is their process for assessing dogs to walk in a group together. Not all dogs get along, and it is important for them to manage different dogs needs, as well as managing a group of dogs.

  • If they offer group walks, what is the maximum number of dogs they handle at once? Too many dogs can make it difficult to supervise them effectively.

  • Transportation: If your dog needs to be transported, how do they ensure their safety and comfort in their vehicle?

  • Emergency procedures: What is their plan in case of an emergency, such as an injury or illness during a walk? Do they have your vet's contact information?

  • Are they first aid trained? Always a handy skill to have.

  • Lead handling skills: Do they understand proper leash handling techniques to prevent pulling or escape?

4. Personality and Connection: A Good Match for Your Dog (and You!)

While professionalism is crucial, a good connection between the walker, your dog, and you are also important.

  • Meet-and-greet: A reputable dog walker will insist on an initial meeting to get to know you and your dog. This is your chance to observe their interaction with your furry friend and ask questions.

  • Observe their interaction with your dog: Does your dog seem comfortable and happy in their presence? Do they show genuine interest in your dog's personality and needs?

  • Your gut feeling: Ultimately, trust your instincts. You need to feel comfortable and confident leaving your dog in their care.

Questions to Ask Potential Dog Walkers:

  • What is your experience with different breeds and temperaments?

  • Are you insured and DBS checked? Can I see proof?

  • What are your rates and cancellation policy?

  • What is your typical walking route and duration?

  • Do you offer solo or group walks? What is the maximum group size?

  • How do you handle emergencies?

  • Can you provide references from other clients?

Taking the Lead:

Choosing the right dog walker is an important decision. By taking the time to research, ask the right questions, and trust your instincts, you can find a reliable and caring professional who will ensure your furry friend gets the exercise and attention they need while you're away. Happy trails!
