You can improve your dog’s life through scent work.

Here are the benefits for all different shapes and sizes of dogs:

  • Puppies have loads of energy to burn. If they get the zoomies, then scent work will help calm them down and give them focus! This is especially important for adolescent dogs, whose behaviour will benefit from more self-control, focus and

    stillness.

  • Over-aroused dogs struggle to calm and rest as they have endless energy to burn.

Scent work uses physical and mental energy, much more than walking provides.

  • Working breeds need an activity to keep them busy. If your dog has been bred from a working line, then you need scent work to give them that much needed job.

  • Scent work is great for elderly dogs, who are not as mobile as they once were, but who still have the drive to be active. It’s also good for dogs recovering from surgery or injuries who can't go out for walks.

  • Great for nervous dogs – using their noses is like a having a safety blanket and is a

good confidence builder. It’s also good for reactive dogs that are undergoing training, as scent is a great tool to help you redirect your dog’s focus.

  • Ex-sporting dogs that still need something to do but can’t continue with agility, etc.

  • Blind and deaf dogs where traditional training may not be suitable. Their nose still needs to work.

  • Dogs that can’t be let off the lead - you can use scent work on walks to make them less mundane.

  • Overweight dogs who find exercise difficult but need to lose weight and burn energy. Scent work uses the heart and lungs to burn calories.

  • It’s low-impact, stress-free and enjoyable.

Why is scent work so important to dogs?

Watch your dog and you will see that when they approach things, they don’t do it with their eyes. Their nose goes towards an area and they begin to sniff.

The dog is a creature of the nose (Alexander Horowitz – Inside of a dog).

The dog's nose is an amazing organ.

Within their nasal cavity, dogs have around 220,000 scent receptors that detect odours,

while we only have around 5 million. They detect simultaneous smells through each nostril and breathe at the same time. The nose creates small air turbines which attracts more scent.

The lining of the dog’s nose when compared to humans is massive. It contains receptors

which take the scent on a journey through the dog’s brain to the olfactory bulb. This is 40% larger compared to a human bulb.

The olfactory receptors send signals to significant parts of the brain including:

The area that involves reward and motivation.

The limbic system which is responsible for emotional and instinctual behaviour.

The frontal cortex for working memory and learning, action to stimuli and behavioural

cognition.

High frequency sniffing increases the dog’s respiration rate:

When at rest it is around 15 reps.

When walking it doubles to around 30 reps.

When running or doing physical activity it is around 90 reps.

But when using their nose to sniff and search, it’s around 140-200 reps!

A short session of scent work will use up more energy than your usual walk!!
